A pillow insert, also known as the pillow form, is what gives a pillow its fluffy shape. It is usually an uncovered or sometimes plainly covered pillow that has been created to use with a decorative pillow covering. In other words, the decorative pillow case is the pillow insert’s outerwear. Pillow inserts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as in a variety of different materials.
Most the time when people make pillows, they prefer to use fairly standard shaped pillow inserts, that are premade. The most common shapes are:
Inserts come in a variety of sizes, all the way from something as small a pillow to be used by a ring bearer, to a pillow that is big enough to throw on the floor. However, the most common sizes are between 16 and 18 inches. It is important to remember, that the insert should always be slightly larger than the pillow covering. This will ensure that the covering always stays slightly taut.
If an individual is creating an oddly shaped covering, he or she might consider filling it with loose material rather than an insert. Another idea for filling the oddly shaped pillow cover, is to use the cover’s pattern to create an insert. Be sure to use a slightly smaller seam allowance.
It is important to pay attention to the material contained within the insert. Not only will this determine the overall shape of the pillow, it will also affect how it feels. There are several different types of materials that can go inside the pillow insert. Some of those are:
• Down – this is probably one of the most expensive materials that an insert can contain; however, it is one of the best. It gives pillows a soft look and feel, which conforms to a person’s shape.
• Polyester – sometimes called polyfill, this is probably one of the least expensive materials available for inserts. They require little maintenance and hold their shape. This can be a good option for anyone that might be allergic to down.
• Bamboo inserts – these are a relatively new way to fill pillow inserts. Pillows filled with this material often feel as if they have been filled with down; however, bamboo is significantly cheaper. It is also biodegradable and considered a renewable resource.
• Other fillers – it is possible to buy other types of filler material, such as wool and buckwheat hull. The average consumer will most likely not use these, but it is nice to have them available in case an individual wants to make a specialty pillow.
Pillow inserts give pillows just that right shape and feel. They are what make pillows look fluffy and support individuals’ backs and heads. In other words, no pillow is complete without the proper insert.
